The layout of the text, use of headings, colour, images, graphics and charts can all be part of an integrated design using MS Word.

Recycling old PDFs by converting them into MS Word documents, means they can be redesigned, refreshed and kept up-to-date.

MS Word templates can be designed to incorporate your brand, allowing you to easily create documents and publications.

The design reflects the brand style of the client, using colour gradients and bold typography to create impact.

To design an A4 document to highlight achievements in protecting and enhancing biodiversity and the natural environment of Scotland.


Images, icons and colours are used to highlight key messages and statistics. The design applies the client's brand style, and the document was produced as an accessible PDF for online publication.


Choosing to use a PDF allows information to be displayed in a professional way that helps the client to engage with their audience.

To design an A4 guide on how to write a tender brief for a path study.


The design applies the client's brand style. Three icons were created to identify each of the main stages in the process of writing a brief. Colour is used to emphasise important points and highlight examples.


An appendix provides an example of a tender brief, with suggested text and notes set out in columns to make it easy for the user to apply the information.

To design an A4 document using the Client's specific brand style for a European communications campaign.


The design uses colour to simulate a 'highlighter marker' and large, bold text to add emphasis to headings and key messages. The body of the text is set on a light grey page with the header and footer area in white, creating a distinctive visual look.


The outputs included a 4 page summary version and four other language versions: French, German, Polish and Spanish.

UNHCR vehicle users rules - covers

To design two A4 booklets that set out the requirements for users of UNHCR's fleet of vehicles. The design applies the client's brand style, and uses colour to differentiate between the two booklets, which are aimed at staff and partner organisations respectively.


The design uses icons to identify the different types of users and to illustrate each of the rules that must be followed. Isometric drawings are used to illustrate safe driving speeds on different types of road. Graphics are used to indicate the rest and work time periods that should be followed when driving.

To design a third A4 tri-fold leaflet in a series about pollinators, this time dealing with wind farms. The leaflet was created using MS Word and provided in PDF format, allowing the client to print it out on desktop printers as required.


The design is consistent with the existing leaflets, so that they form part of a set. The bottom edge of the images in the leaflet are given a wavy line to add interest to the page. Links to further information are highlighted by an arrow icon.

National Nature Reserve - pollinator activity sheet

To design 2 double-sided A4 children's activity sheets on pollinators, that can be printed out on desktop printers, for two of Scotland's National Nature Reserves.


The design references a cartoon style to frame information about pollinators in an engaging and colourful way. The activity sheets include a quiz, fun facts and jokes.


The sheets were designed using Microsoft PowerPoint, which allows the text to be easily edited by the client - making the sheets adaptable to future needs.

To design a 68 page A4 Turkish document providing legal guidance on clean air.


The design applies the client's brand style and uses graphic elements, headings, coloured text, and coloured text boxes to add structure to the layout and highlight key information.


The guide was designed using Microsoft Word and supplied as a PDF for online publication and as a print-ready PDF. The online PDF includes a clickable contents page and hyperlinks to sources and further information.

To design an A4 report showcasing projects that received funding for marine species and habitat improvements.


The design uses curves and waves that reflect the client's logo to frame images and display data in bar charts.


The report was created using Microsoft Word. Case studies are supported by icons that visualise key aspects of a project: the funding, location, species types and habitat categories.

To design an A4 booklet to present two bold ideas to revitalise and reconnect Falkirk town centre, helping to transform Falkirk as a place to live, work and visit.


The booklet was created in Microsoft Word, incorporating graphics designed using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The Word version was then converted into a PDF for publication. The tagging and running order of the PDF was corrected to meet the PDF/UA standard.

To design a second A4 tri-fold leaflet relating to pollinators, this time focusing on transport corridors. Two versions of the leaflet were created: one as a PDF, to create printed copies; and one as a simplified. styled and formatted Word file, to be used by the client as the source document for creating a webpage.


The leaflet uses the same design style as previous leaflets (see below), creating a set.

To design an A4 tri-fold leaflet to disseminate information on how people can help pollinators. Two versions of the leaflet were created: one as a PDF, to create printed copies; and one as a simplified. styled and formatted Word file, to be used by the client as the source document for creating a webpage.

To design a 30 page A4 booklet in the client's brand style that showcases community projects. The booklet was created as a Microsoft Word file, where the text and images can be easily styled and formatted for accessibility. The Word file was then used as the source document for creating an accessible PDF.


The design incorporates large images to create impact. An icon and colour blocking are used to highlight interviews with participants in the projects.

To design a 15 page A4 report using Microsoft Word in the client's corporate style. The design recreates the client's brand identity, including colours, font and styles.


The project included the creation of graphs and charts. The design applies a distinct and modern style, and uses colours that are taken from the client's colour scheme.

To design four A4 briefing notes in the client's corporate style. Using Microsoft Word to create the briefing notes allows the client's branding to be 'built-in' to the document, while also allowing the user to amend and update the publication in the future.


The briefing notes use the same structure and layout so that it is clear they form part of a series. A different icon and colour bar is used to distinguish each briefing note.

SIGNpost guide and spreasheet dashboard
SIGNpost guide

To design a guide that illustrates SIGNpost - a tool that provides a framework for measuring, scoring and grading the quality of an urban green space network.


The guide was designed in MS Word, formatted for accessibility, and incorporating graphics created using Adobe Illustrator. It was then converted into a PDF for publication. An Excel spreadsheet converts the scores into the relevant grade and policy direction.

Learning in Local Greenspace overview report cover

To design a report to illustrate the key impacts of the Learning in Local Greenpace project. The report was designed using the accessibility features of Microsoft Word. Using the Word version as the source document, an accessible PDF was created so that it could be published online.


The design follows the client's brand guidelines and includes five graphics to highlight the main results of the project. Quotes from project participants support the graphics and reinforce the key messages.

Peatland Action documents and templates
Construction Design and Management flowcharts

To design and create a suite of 31 MS Word documents for the Peatland Action Fund, including guidance notes, application forms, letter templates and report templates. The design applies the client's styling consistently across all the different document types.


Five flowcharts were designed to illustrate the different stages of implementing projects. In addition, a PowerPoint presentation template was created and designed in the same style.

To design an A4 booklet to showcase projects implementing green infrastructure. The booklet, designed in MS Word, applies the client's corporate style and uses content compiled from online blog entries from the project website. PDF versions of the booklet were created for print and online publication.


The booklet consists of a cover page, contents page, article pages, a map showing the project locations, and a back cover. Each blog article includes text, a pull-out quote and an image.

Syvers virtual art exhibition - PowerPoint

A creative project to design a virtual art exhibition using Microsoft PowerPoint to display artworks that were created in Photoshop.


The artworks were placed in a template designed to look like an art gallery, which was then saved as a video so that the presentation could be shared online.

To design a report, applying the corporate style, that sets out text and graphs in a clear and easy to follow format.


The text and graphs are laid out in a clean and uncluttered design, allowing the reader to easily read the results being conveyed in the charts.


A stylised image, consistent with the brand style, creates a distinctive and attractive front cover.

To design six sets of A3 signs for trails in National Nature Reserves. Each sign to contain information and images about pollinators.


The signs are designed in MS Word to enable the client to create and update signs for the trails.


The design of the layout presents the content in a clear and unfussy format.

To design a new guide, aimed at an audience of professional practitioners, that highlights resources and case studies, for publication online.


The design presents the information in a clear and easy to read format. The colour scheme uses bright colours that are consistent with the client's brand guidelines.


The project includes the design of an infographic, diagrams, tables and a hexagon motif.

To design and lay out a guidance document from online content.


The online text and images were laid out and formatted as a document. Designing the guidance using MS Word enables it to be published as a PDF and to be easily updated.


The addition of chapters, section numbers, heading styles, tables and hyperlinks aid the reader in exploring the content of the guide.

To convert a PDF into an MS Word document and format it so that it can be updated by the client, while ensuring that the structure and number of pages is maintained.


The design of the Word document reproduces the style and layout of the original PDF. Graphics were recreated and incorporated along with images.


Text boxes are used to contain the content within a fixed structure.

To design and format a children's services plan to include graphics, charts, tables, children's artwork and quotes.


The design uses an indicator wheel device to provide a colour coding for the priorities in the plan. Tabs in the margins denote each chapter.


The text is formatted consistently and laid out in a clear and engaging way to ensure that the plan is accessible and appealing to a wide audience.

To create a new design for a guide on managing access to the outdoors, including formatting, layout, editing, proofreading, and amending and creating technical drawings.


The design uses icons to illustrate the content and signpost each section. Technical drawings were created in the style of the originals.


The guide was produced in MS Word to allow minor changes in the future, and also supplied as a print-ready PDF and a digital PDF.

To recycle a PDF of an existing publication into MS Word, redesigning the document and allowing it to be updated.


The redesign applies a clean and fresh graphic style. The Word document contains image place holders that allow the client to easily update the content.
